Park ranger Rodney offered us an educational tour of the
Bacalar Chico Marine reserve that encompasses the northern portion of Ambergris Caye. It started with a boat ride up through the Mayan channel that
separates Mexico (on the left) and Belize (on the right). In attendance on this day's tour was John
Midlen, Jim and Ann
Maloney, Dan Russell, and Gregg and Caroline Garner and their daughters.
Chac Balam is
noticeable from a distance as it soars above the treetops.

Member Ann
Maloney and her guest Caroline Garner in the Mayan tomb.

Shards of
mayan pottery can be found all over this site.

Next stop, the San Juan area on the back side of the island. There is a small museum with information about
Bacalar Chico.

The trip back is through the Cantina Lagoon. This is a prime fly fishing area. It gets pretty shallow in a few spots, so we did a little pushing along the way.
At the far end of the lagoon we unloaded for a short walk through the jungle on a trail that brings us back to the beach just north of Robles Point (the windmill).
We hope to do more of these trips in other months.
